Teacher convicted for corporal punishment

New Delhi: In a first of its kind, a government school teacher was convicted by a court for parading a class VI student naked in school for three hours. The incident took place nine years ago on Sep 15, 1997, in Rana Pratap Bagh Senior Secondary School. The victim’s fault: he took a dip in the school tank on a summer afternoon.

P C Gupta, the then vice-principal of the school, was convicted by metropolitan magistrate, Tis Hazari court on Monday for dishonouring the dignity of a person, causing injury, criminal intimidation and use of criminal force. Arguments on the quantum of the sentence will take place on March 26.

He was convicted under sections 323 (causing hurt), 352 (criminal force), 355 (criminal force to dishonour a person) and 356 (criminal force to commit theft) of the IPC. – From Indian Express.

In the morning of that fateful day, Rakesh was pulled up for not wearing the school trousers. He was made to stand outside the class. Then he joined his friends when they went to take a dip in the school tank, something they did every day during summer.
Seeing Gupta, everyone except Rakesh fled. Gupta pulled him up, dragged him to his office naked and beat him severely. His parents were called, who apologised and produced a fresh set of clothes. The clothes, said mother Guddi, were thrown away and the parents asked to leave before being told by Gupta: “He will anyway sweep the streets,why does he need to study?’’ Rakesh’s father is a sweeper.
The boy’s ordeal had just started. During recess, he was asked to stand in front of the school in the condition, made a murga and beaten up again when he covered his face in shame.

Rakesh, now a 21-year-old, never quite recovered from the trauma. He left his studies and is now working as a mechanic in a factory. Speaking to TOI, Guddi said: “For the first two to three months, I forced him to go to school. He was constantly taunted by teachers and students and we thought it was his fault so we never paid attention. He withdrew into his shell and only later did we realised he needed medical help.’’
Said Rakesh’s lawyer P S Sharda: “The police never registered a case. Through the case proceedings, witnesses kept dropping out because of intimidation. In fact, a teacher said in court, ‘I am unable to depose the truth... I have been threatened.’ Finally, it was just one witness — Rakesh’s classmate Amit Kishore — who stuck to his statement till the very end. It was touching to see one child holding on for his mate while the adults backed out.’’

Kudos Amit Kishore for helping Rakesh to get justice.
Kudos to the judges - for finally giving a right verdict and not some funny statements.

Shame on the teacher for abusing Rakesh and fighting a case against him.
Shame on our Judicial system - it takes 9 years to give justice to Rakesh.
Shame on the society - for providing systematic approach for Rakesh to become a mechanic.

for his 'contribution' in the making of Rakesh
into a mechanic and screwing his life.

With all the glorified ideas (and may be issues) you have about the "President of India" - so called scientist and humanitarian, please update yourself with this small piece of criticism..!!

Kalam never hesitated to be with so called "Godmen" - whether it is "Rapist"(accused - not proved) Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi or "Holy Pedophile"(accused - not proved), Magical Trickster(proved a thousand times) Sai Baba or any other so called swamijis..!!!

We all know how horrible, useless, moronic, stupid, foolish, irrational, blindly religious, fanatic, and opportunistic our politicians are.. what pains me (and so many of us) are that Kalam is not a "mere" third-rate politician.. he is a qualified scientist who proved his mettle in the midst of all the difficulties India had in the international arena - in developing our space programs.. He is glorified as a great scientist - (thought: though not a single patent or theory he has on his name - must he be called a great Engineer than a scientist?), good Manager/Leader - for doing amazing things for Indian space programs with almost no aid from US/Russia and taking the vision of stalwarts like Homi Bhaba, Vikram Sarabhai further and making India achieve its true sleeping potential.. Fine..!!

For the person who read and write extensively, who dedicated his life for Science and Humanity, and who still love to teach people, esp children - on the value of dreams and educating them on the methods of realizing their dreams... Is it what he is for..?

I don't want to take it for granted that Kalam "should be" a rationlist or atheist or anything of that sort. It is his personal choice to be whatever he want to be.. Though in all means, any educated person like you and me can say that he should have educated his inner mind that there is no God, and all these Meditation, Yoga, and all other Zen kind of practices are nothing to do with religion...And yes, he should be knowing that Miracles of any sort doesn't exist in real world and they are all mere tricks..!!

I am dismayed by the very thought of how a scientist can be this ignorant - considering the value and amount of data available to him about Sai baba kind of cut-out Fraud/Tricksters? How can he even think that he can have "alliance" with him? Did Kalam change his ideas in due course of time? Did Kalam lost his senses in front of mere magical tricks which can be performed by P.C Sorcar Or can even be done by a third-grade magician in the street?

Definitely he is a better person comparatively with all the present day useless, self-centered politicians.. He can be a religious person with his own right to be one.. And, that is none of my business. But thinking a scientist/President as a superstitious, miracle believing, unnecessarily politically motivated President of India.. the glorified state...!!

Will you expect the President of India be a God Man-loving, Miracle-appreciating lay-person?
Or he/she should be rational and the one who follows science?

Land of Momentary Lapses.. and Ah.. Happy Children's Day..!!

Claimer : I am not against any established order/system of India (or any country in the world), and I don't want name/fame by writing/sensationalizing an issue. Its just that I want to point out and create awareness among ourselves on the momentary lapses happening in India against children.

There are so many wonderful things happening in India for our glorious Children..!! But, despite all these hopes - Majority of the things happening in the land of minorities(?) which make you feel less proud to be an Indian..if you are patriotic at all..

The Justice system in India always gives nice case studies on ethics, law and order, methods of penalization, and the Guinness-record approaching time periods for solving a case etc... All at the cost of poor people, poor in education, rights and privileges, economy, awareness.. The people who are made and left to be "poor people" for the rest of their generation...!

The recent judgment on the rape of an 8 year old girl by a 30year old man in Punjab is shocking...!! The man was earlier sentenced to death and later by the bench of Judges in the Apex court his death sentence was 'reduced' to a rigorous life-imprisonment.

This is the time of great people having great arguments/(mis)understandings against death penalty - whether it is regarding Saddam Hussein or Afzal on attack against our parliament - I personally am very much in favour of death sentence in the case of death was caused by the accused by any means, whatever may the intention was at the time of crime.

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man lured an eight-year-old girl, finding her alone, and
raped her in a field. She died due to excessive bleeding. The trial court at Mansa, Punjab, convicted Amrit Singh and awarded him the death penalty, probably having in mind the punishment awarded by the Supreme Court to Dhananjay Chatterjee in the infamous Hetal Parekh case. The Punjab and Haryana High Court agreed with the trial court on both counts — the conviction and sentence.
Amrit moved the apex court challenging the conviction. A Supreme Court Bench comprising Justices S B Sinha and Dalveer Bhandari also agreed with the trial court and the HC about the guilt of the accused and felt that Amrit was rightly convicted for rape. However, it had serious doubts about fastening the murder charge on the accused. "The death occurred not as a result of strangulation but because of excessive bleeding," the Bench said quoting the doctor’s report, which noted that at that age, a girl has two litres of blood in the body and as she had bled half-a-litre of blood, it was enough to cause death from shock.
"The death occurred, therefore, as a consequence of, and not because of, any specific act on the part of the accused," said Justice Sinha, writing the judgment. It refused to classify the gruesome act as a "rarest of rare" case which had resulted in the death of a girl who was ostensibly being escorted home by the accused, her neighbour, on the evening of November 3, 2003. Courts impose a death sentence only after being convinced that the case falls in the rarest of rare category. The apex court imposed rigorous imprisonment for life on Amrit Singh, but when judged by the standards used in the Hetal Parekh case, the Bench may seem to have taken a lenient view of the heinous crime. The Supreme Court Bench said: "Amrit Singh had no pre-meditation for commission of the offense. The offense may look heinous, but under no circumstances can it be said to be a rarest of rare case." "Momentary lapse" as a mitigating factor may be cited by the defence attorney of a rape case accused. "The way the girl was raped may be brutal, but it could have been a momentary lapse on the part of Amrit Singh, seeing a lonely girl at a secluded place."

Did you read these lines ? - "The way the girl was raped may be brutal, but it could have been a momentary lapse on the part of Amrit Singh, seeing a lonely girl at a secluded place."

Is it the fault of an 8 year old girl to go alone in a place ? Should an 8 year old expect a possibility of getting raped if she choose to go to a "secluded" place? The death was caused by bleeding - this is what the doctor's report say. The judges agree that the death was due to the bleeding, but the bleeding was not caused "intentionally" by Amrit Singh...! thats the justification. He just raped the girl - because it was a momentary lapse on his part - with no intention to let the girl bleed - he just raped, that's all - but the girl is just 8 years old and she will have only 2 litres of blood in her body out of which 1/2 a litre bleeding will surely result in her death - and thats what happened.

Moral of the story:

I cut your throat with a small shaving blade and my intention was good ( may be noble) as it was just to show you that you can see blood oozing not only from the limbs - but from your neck also - and you bleed badly. Now because of that bleeding you die and NOT because of me cutting your throat with the blade...!! This is what the judges say..!!

Wonderful.. isn't it..? Isn't the time the judges wake up from their long sleep and understand the whole story? Isn't the time, some of the well-known law schools in India like NALSAR take notice of these and do something about it? Where are the NGOs on human rights in India? They make it a point that they get attention by sensitizing the "human rights" when terrorists like Afzal is sentenced to death, or Veerappan was in killed in an encounter, or anything happens to a politician's son after he himself admitted killing Jessica Lal? What is the focus here? Do some people have more "rights" than others in Justice ?

Does Amrit Singh's life has any precious value than the eight old victim girl's life ? If yes, what's that? If no, then why these kind of judgments are given by the Apex court? is it because of the frustration the courts/some judges have as their judgments on various cases are never implemented by the states or government departments?

If Apex court cannot give justice to a poor child of India, then whom we have to go forward? Are the victim's parents required to meet our President every time ?

Will some other judge in future say that this was just a "momentary lapse" of the judges S B Sinha and Dalveer Bhandari ?

On the other side, Children in India are becoming sharper, smarter and more intelligent now-a-days. You can attribute so many reasons to it, but not all the children who get the same things does the the things same..!

Kudos to you Master Kishen.. you are the master.. There are so many films came out with this same topic.. But let the God help the government wake up at least after seeing your movie. The movie on children of India - by a child... You are more than a child and let your wishes and efforts guide all of us - mortal spirits arrested and penalized just because of our momentary lapse to be here in this society with these kinds of governments..!!

This is about a great educationist, self-styled professor(?) who does not have any certificates or institution's names to claim regarding his amazing qualifications to show the world when the credibility -- of his own, his great 'eminent educationist ' father's, and his institutes -- is questioned..

This is about the same great "count your ____ before they ____" (fill in the blanks with whatever comes in your mind.. that doesn't matter...!) fame, Arindam choudhuri.

Anybody who has a wee bit of common sense can say that the book is all crap.. as his so called "i-theory" and his consulting practices. And sees his full page ads in leading dailies..? Prepared using MS-Word but forgot to spell-check..?

Kudos to Varna Sriraman and Rashmi Bansal (of JAM magazine), Gaurav Sabnis, and all others who stood by their words..!

This is the story of freedom of expression in India when you say something against a politically backed (packed?) corporate house and the moral or the story is that our government and politicians are bullshitting with baseless issues like everyday.

In short, Rashmi, Varna Sriraman, and Gaurav Sabnis are facing "legal" (re) action from the illegal institution which gives tall claims and screws up students' life badly. Gaurava ddecided to quit IBM(read it here) due to this silly reaction of a uneducated asshole. The entire blogosphere is with them and against the ponytail, self-styled 'guru' of management who couldn't even pass a bachelors degree.

Indian governance is one of the rarest in the World. We have everything it takes to be a great society, but our present condition is very pathetic. Why are we like this? Where did we go wrong? Before jumping into conclusions and creating solutions, can we look into some of the points (there are millions of them) that makes present day india ?

Kunjarani Devi became the first Indian gold medallist at the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on Thursday. The 38-year-old lifter set a new clean and jerk record (166 kg) in the 48 kg division for women.

Till date she has won 52 medals in international competition.

The Games first Gold medal has been awarded in the Women’s 48kg class to Indian dynamo, Kunjarani Devi Nameirakpam who outlifted Canada’s Dozois-Prévost. Australia’s Erika Yurika Yamasaki finished third.

Backward effect of a forwarded mail:

We all receive so many forwarded mails and some of us choose to do "Mark as read" in our email clients to avoid getting frustrated after suffering several times reading the junk content... And lot of us just ignore the forwarded mails and very rare breed of us will go forward to create rules and enable junk mail options to get rid of the instant frustration..!!

This article is neither about the ways of managing junk emails nor about the ways people react to junk mails... Its about the impact a forwarded mail can make in the hearts of all of us.. Irrespective of whether we are horribly attached to the geographical and anthropological boundaries of your country or not... want to call this as patriotism..? Really Sorry.. I don't choose to do that... my definition of patriotism is doing something really good for the people of this planet... I am patriotic to the entire planet... not only my country..!!

do u know this, indian economy is in a crisis - as you are all aware! India like many other asian countries, india is undergoing a severe economic crunch. Many indian industries are closing down. The indian economy is in a crisis and if we do not take proper steps to control those, we will be in a critical situation. More than 30000 crore rupees offoreign exchange are being siphoned out of our country on products such as cosmetics, snacks, tea, beverages...etc which are grown, produced and consumed here .

A cold drink that costs only 70/80 paise to produce is sold for nine rupees , and a major chunk of profits from these are sent abroad. This is a serious drain on indian economy.

Did you know that " coca cola " and " sprite " belong to the same multinational company, "coca cola " ?

On one hand coke advertisements say that ' jo chaho hojaye, cocacola enjoy' (i.e . Whatever the hell, let it happen, you drink coke) ; and on the other hand, sprite says that 'bhujao only pyas, baki all bakwas'

(i.e. Drinks can just quench thirst all other claims are false). What can you do ? You can consider some of the better alternatives to aerated drinks.

you can drink lemon juice, fresh fruit juices, chilled lassi (sweet or sour), butter milk, coconut water, jaljeera, enerjee, masala milk..........

Everyone deserves a healthy drink, including you! Over and abo! Ve all this, economic sanctions have been imposed on us. We have nothing against multinational companies, but to protect ou! R own interests we request everybody to use indian products only for next two years. With the rise in petrol prices, if we do not do this, the rupee will devalue further and we will end up paying much more for the same products in the near future.

What you can do about it ?
1. Buy only products manufactured by wholly indian companies.
2. Enroll as many people as possible for this cause.

Each individual should become a leader for this awareness. This is the only way to save our country from severe economic crisis. You don't need to give-up your lifestyle. You just need to choose an alternate product.

All categories of products are available from wholly indian companies.

Thousands of poor innocent indians are working as tailors for stitching the world's popular readymade clothes( alan paine, peter england etc.....) ,. But they are paid a poor amount.

This is happening becuse of our ignorance. India is one of the major textile exporter in the world.

Our tailors are famous even in countries like us and uk. Then why should we blindly give in to the attraction of foreignbrands?

Please think about it.

Every indian product you buy makes a big difference. It saves india. Let us take a firm decision today.

Buy indian to be indian we are not against of foreign products.we are not anti-multinational.
We are trying to save our nation. Every day is a struggle for a real freedom.

We achieved our independence after losing many lives. They died painfully to ensure that we live peacefully . The current trend is very threatening. Multinationals call it globalisation of indian economy. For indians like you and me it is recolonisation of india.

The colonist's left india then. But this time they will make sure they don't make any mistakes. Who would like to let a" goose that lays golden eggs" slip away.

Please remember : political freedom is useless without economic independence. Russia , s.korea, mexico........the list is very long!! Let us learn from their experience and from our history.

Let us do the duty of every true indian.

Finally: it's obvious that u can't give up all of the items mentioned above,so give up atleast one item to for the sake of our country. Little drops make a great ocean.

Analysis of the patriotic fever:

See the hue and cry against multinational products.... and see how the mailer is pleading you to use ONLY Indian products...!! I have some questions here....

What makes a product Indian? Made in India? Or Made by Indian agencies for Indian companies...? In what way are we sure that the companies claiming to be "Indian"?

If a product is called 'Indian' just because its made somewhere in India, then even Colgate is Indian, and Pepsi and Coke too are Indian products...!

Or may be a company or a product is called 'Indian' just because there is a sanskritised or indianized word in its product name or company name.... Just as in Hindustan Lever Ltd...? And you want to argue that the revenue of HLL does not go to Unilever...? Are you sure? May be its not going.... May be it is.... But are you sure that the so called "foreign" companies don't contribute to Indian people? Think about it....

If the product is made in India using a 'foreign' technology, then Pepsi and Coke are not Indian products... so as the so called Indian products Promise toothpaste, and 'Lakme' - the so called great company 'developing' Indian culture (by conducting Lakme India fashion week with skinny girls with enhanced parts wearing hanky's as dresses) is actually a spun-off venture from Hindustan Lever Ltd(HLL) which is actually a member of Unilever Corp of UK/Netherlands....!!

The argument here is that there are so many so called foreign players - direct or indirect - giving immense contribution to Indian economy in so many ways.... Its true that part of the money they earn is going to their parent companies... But who is buying it? We. Right...? One claim is that we are buying the products of foreign companies because we are fascinated by anything that is foreign.... the colonial remaining.... May be that’s there in a small percentage. But is that the only reason? Are we trying fooling ourselves by keeping the quality and cost factor at bay in the name of bullshit patriotism?

Okay... Now you are convinced that HLL is the foreign company but contributing a lot to Indian society... and you can buy the quality products from HLL...!! Wait.... the counter-argument is that HLL is killing the environment by polluting Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu with Mercury...

What am I trying to prove by the way? HLL kind of 'foreign' companies are good ? or bad?

Relax... it is not the question of good or bad... if the product is affordable by you and good quality one, buy it whether it is local, global or any bullshit...!! Will you buy a horrible product just because it is Indian....?

But when the companies are into screwing up the human existence like the mercury pollution of HLL, we need to protest and make our so called governments to take actions against them...!! Where... in India? My God...!! Some of the good souls in Pollution control board are not able to control the intra and inter-departmental pollution... When will they be able to control the real pollution...!! Do we need pollution control board or "No-Pollution" board? Is Zero-pollution possible...? If you think anything is possible, we need work out the ways to make it possible...... what do you say...?

Coming back to the topic.... In Wikipedia the list of Indian companies include a whole lot of foreign companies like Covansys, Syntel....!! :-) Are they Indian companies because they are headed by or founded by Indians? Even though they found those companies in silicon valley...? Give me a breakk....!!

Lets see one more 'pure' Indian company... Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited... Most of Ranbaxy's products are manufactured by license from foreign pharmaceutical developers, though a significant percentage of their products are off-patent drugs that are manufactured and distributed without licensing from the original manufacturer because the patents on such drugs have expired.... Will you buy those medicines saying that it is made by an "Indian" company or you won't buy it because they are 'foreign-recycled-and-presently-invalid-products' ?

Have you ever taken a decision in buying a medicine based on whether it is Indian or foreign...? If not, why any other product-buying-decisions should be different? Just because medicines will affect you immediately and soaps and tea will not...? Are you sure...?

What the hell is this...? What’s the solution finally...?

The main objective of this article is to educate the un-initiated about the patriotic ferver based on product-buying-decisions. In my opinion, it is dangerous to take your day-to-day decisions based on patriotic or regionalist basis. It will not only screw up our relations with the external world but make us short-sighted too.

The solution starts with the following:

Increasing the awareness of Indian products by aggressive marketing, Increasing the quality of the products of so called Indian companies, Ensuring that the Government funds are properly reaching the cottage industries/small scale business, Making entrepreneurship as the compulsory subject from the 1oth class after making education compulsory till 10th, or Introducing degrees like B.A or MBA in Entrepreneurship management in at least 5 universities in a state, or anything equivalent to that.

And, revamp the justice system.... Make laws very strict....

Kill corruption.... Kill complacency... Kill the horrible, 'entitlement' mentality... Kill power abuse.... both authoritative and electrical powers... Kill the religious fundamentalism... May it be any religion... Make a secular state a reality.... not only in old governmental records and amendments.... Kill foolishness.... Kill useless expenditures in government and private.... create a service-oriented government... Don’t allow anybody with a criminal background to contest in elections or take part in any other government/public initiatives... Kill the bad habits.... Stop smoking... Stop drinking.... don’t initiate the diseases by your foolishness... Triple the fund of university grants... Manage everything well...Keep any allocations/decisions public...

Make technology awareness a mandatory thing in schools/colleges... Concentrate and build a great primary education system... come out of the present Montessori Kindergarten rubbish... Teach engineers the value of non-technical things and liberal arts... teach arts people about the necessity of technical education.... Educate people on sex... its impact on life.... its consequences ... everything about it... kill the police bothering the people at beaches and parks... Shoot the bastards who oppose any festivals.... Shoot the bastards.... the evil politicians, business persons, rapists, abusers, ditching specialists (?), or anybody who cheats on anything/anybody.... after recovering the amount from that person....

Not all the damage is recoverable.... What will you recover in a rape/abuse case? Let the abuser pay 10 Lakhs (or more) to do a charity organization/university/government.... before taking the bullets in the chest....!!

I hear somebody moaning about human rights...? Arhh.......We wil talk about this some other time...!!

So, if economic power is the goal , then making India or any other country as a super power in economy doesn't come with buying or not buying products... that’s a cheap, crazy consumerist view of stupid management/marketing gurus...!

And finally start spreading the awareness against all the junk things in society.... as you cannot stop junks in overnight... start spreading the awareness.......

Think different... think rational... Discuss... Debate....
You will realize what I am saying....!!!

Educate the children about all these......

CoGMP: How do you measure success?
Me: Successful people are passionate and content, and therefore happy. Successful people are secure about their place, personally and professionally. Successful people are humble and inspiring. Successful people are very much in this world physically and dream about things which are not in this world..!!

CoGMP: What is your biggest personal achievement?
Me: My biggest personal achievement is taking the risk to follow my heart – to write and help educating the children – rather than take the "safe" path and do something I wasn’t as thrilled about..

CoGMP: What are your career goals?
Me: I have a long list of great career goals, most of which I am too superstitious to discuss! I dream big; it keeps me focused and motivated - but in a micro level I want to start with educating the children.

CoGMP: What is your primary source of inspiration?
Me: This entire world..! vague answer? :-) Okay, I am most inspired by my favorite writers, visual artists and photographers, and musicians.

CoGMP: Who is the person (living) that you would most want to have a conversation with?
Me: I would love to have a conversation with Stephen Hawking, the cosmologist and the one who proved inability is not equal to disability..!

CoGMP: What troubles you the most about the world we live in?
Me: The rise of fundamentalist interpretations of religion, worldwide. I am dismayed that most (if not all) major religions have been hijacked by a minority of followers, who use it to justify and forward their politics.

CoGMP: What is your favorite cause?
Me: I am not sure if I have one single "cause" yet. I am most interested in freedom of speech, children’s literacy, the integration of the creative arts and science at all levels of education, and gender equality.

CoGMP: If you had another life, what would you be doing?
Me: I am doing what I love; I wouldn’t change a thing.

CoGMP: Any advice for the up and coming professionals?
Me: As cliché as it sounds, do what you love (and the money will come). Don’t conform to other people’s expectations of yourself. And, think big, even if what you want to accomplish seems a little ridiculous. Everything is possible with goal-oriented, positive thinking.

Even before we start discussing the hot topic, let’s have a small introduction about woman - the most important soul in this universe…

In the great majority of species on the earth the female form exceeds the male in size and strength and often in predatory instinct; and that sex relationships may assume almost any form on earth as the conditions of life vary.

Woman abuse is a pervasive and extremely serious problem. We can't afford to ignore it, deny it, or minimize its effects.

Being part of the solution means understanding the issue of woman abuse, knowing how to help someone who is being abused, and being aware of resources within our organizations and our communities.

Bringing this information to you is an important first step in making you and me more supportive and responsive to the needs of abused women.

Abuse: The game of power and Control:

Harassment, discrimination, racism,- woman abuse and sexual harassment are important issues in the workplace today; up until a few years ago they were rarely identified as problems. For some people, the emergence of so many serious new issues feels overwhelming. One reason may be that in many workplaces, these issues have been presented as distinct problems, each requiring a different understanding and different solutions.

Some “great” people refer to this as the "issue of the month" phenomenon.

Although there may be unique aspects to each of these workplace issues, I believe they are fundamentally linked. All of these issues are symptoms of a culture of inequality- a culture which sets up specific groups of people as targets for violence. One way to see the links among the workplace issues of woman abuse, sexual harassment, general harassment, racism and discrimination, is by understanding the dynamics of power and control which underlie them all.

For many women, the workplace reinforces their experiences of inequality based on gender, race and class. Individually, both men and women are potential victims of harassment and discrimination in the workplace. However, it is women, collectively, who are systematically undervalued, underpaid, sexually harassed and discriminated against. To understand this reality, it is useful to gain more insight into the use and misuse of personal power and the power of privilege.

Woman abuse crosses all cultural and social lines. Whether women are wealthy or poor, able-bodied or disabled, rural- or urban-based, North Indian or south Indian, Higher or lower in caste - they experience abuse in many similar ways. Yet while many experiences of victimization and survival are shared, there are many differences.

Being aware of and respecting these differences is an essential part of our life.

This includes giving your ears to the pains of your fellow human being called “working woman” (will you ever say “working men”? Why the hell this discrimination?) who may be respectable lecturer in a college or a sweeper in a nearby warehouse - irrespective of whether she is your arch-rival, worst-enemy, or anything or any sort.

What is the solution?

Too often when we speak about the ways abuse affects women and has an impact on the workplace, we are speaking only of the mainstream: the educated urban women. But when we list resources, we are usually listing resources for a helpless woman abused in a village or town by a Landlord or coworker or by a priest.. What kind of a effect are we expecting when we specifically say a woman is abused by a priest? More sympathy for her? Or is it that we are comforting the rational mind against religious practitioners? Its all bullshit.. The abuse is an abuse, irrespective of whether we emphasize upon it or not…

We repeatedly draw a skewed section of the population to our events because our publicity goes only to the mainstream. Our public service announcements and brochures land on the desks of the more privileged: People with some measure of power….!

To reach out and support all women in our workplaces we have to make a special effort.. Through an extensive outreach process and carefully structured focus groups, we have to listen to the victim and involve a wide cross section of women in the discussions and planning of workplace initiatives. The commitment to involving as many diverse groups as possible, and the respect and value given to these groups' suggestions, provide a model for all of us in addressing these issues.

Should we involve men?

Violence against women is not just a "women's issue," it is an issue that affects all of us. If we are ever going to have workplaces with zero tolerance of violence, it is essential that both men and women are involved in and committed to the work.

In our personal lives, in our communities and in our workplaces, a major challenge is finding ways to ensure men's involvement in ending violence against women. With a few exceptions, the work to make woman abuse a workplace issue has been done primarily by women. Men who have played a leadership role tell me that they often find themselves marginalized and the issue trivialized by their colleagues.

Breaking through the barriers to involve men requires education, understanding, flexibility and creativity. Workplace initiatives against violence need the support of everyone at all levels of an organization, especially senior management which is often male-dominated.

Where to start?

As individuals, many people are deeply concerned about the issue of woman abuse. They have experienced its impact on their workplace and would like to see the workplace be more supportive, but they don't know what they can do within their organization.

Build a Group:

Don't work alone. Find other friends and colleagues who are concerned about the issue of violence against women and want to make changes.
Spend time getting to know each other, educating yourselves about the issue and finding the commonalities in your understanding, both intellectual and emotional.

Define the Problem

Collect general information and specific examples on woman abuse and its impact on the workplace.
Decide what needs to happen in your workplace to support abused women.
Set your priorities for action based on your resources. Be realistic about what you can accomplish with these resources. A small project, successfully completed, is more useful than a large one which flounders because of lack of support.

Plan Your Strategies

Set goals and objectives for your work with which everyone in the group can agree. develop a simple workplan that identifies who is responsible for each piece of work.
Collect the supporting resources you need to counter the flak.

Carry Out Your Plans

Ensure that key individuals in your workplace know about your plans. Important groups to keep informed are management, supervisors, union reps and human resource personnel. In some workplaces, these groups have been supportive of woman abuse initiatives from the beginning; in others, they are reluctant to get involved and a large part of the work in getting started involves educating these morons about the issue and its impact on the workplace.

Be creative about how you promote and advertise your activities. An awareness session entitled 'Sexual Harassament to women and Its Impact on the Workplace' may scare away more people than it attracts. Find your own words to suit your workplace culture, make the issue non-threatening and draw everyone into the discussion.

Check Your Progress
Ask a few key questions every few months to assess your progress – as you should do any process management activity:

What's working well?
What should we do differently?
How are we making a difference?

And above anything, celebrate your successes - large or small!!!

In the field of violence against women, it is very easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of work and change still required. Taking time to recognize and celebrate your group's accomplishments is an essential part of maintaining the commitment.

Keeping It Going:

Once you have started a workplace initiative on woman abuse, the challenge is to keep it going. There is no "quick fix" for this problem. It requires a long process of attitudinal change and organizational development to build a work environment that is supportive of and empowering to all employees.

The perpetrators should be given to the hands of law and it should take care of these "beings"... And there should be no distinction given on the basis of gender, religion, age or anything else..

Nothing happens even after the law has done it part? Shoot the bastards..!!

You have the information now..!! You are privileged to have the information and the real value of it is in using it for good purposes.

The minute you turnaround and decide to use your privilege - and use it for good - you won't be indespair..!

There are so many reasons why this happens in India:

Pseudo-secular conventionalism followed by our politicians.
Religious fundamentalism practiced by so-called self-declared religious policing organizations.
The common citizen fully frustrated by the government policies and tend to ignore anything put forward to him by the government but helplessly abide the them as s/he cannot move to do something for them/society leaving their daily bread.
A lot of educated cream like us are only spending time in debating the issue and not spreading the awareness in the society.

In her article, Megha is approaching the religious tolerance/intolerance in the religious-political angle and pointing out how horrible our present day politicians are in handling this sensitive issue and how hideous the actions of the so called parties and governments keeping the pet attitude to some religions for their vote bank politics.

There are chances that Megha will be seriously misunderstood by the not-so-well-informed reader.. Is she for only Hinduism and against other religions? Is she trying to gather a group of like-minded people against the atrocious governmental attitudes against the over-tolerance of Hindus?

The answer is a big NO.

She is pained by the western attitudes against Hinduism and Hindus in general and the Indian government’s and Indian Hindu religious community’s pseudo-tolerance against what is happening to them and their religion. As a follower of Hindu religious philosophy she is raising her voice against this unabashed atrocity against anything Hindu.

Now let me put my views on this sensitive topic. This is sensitive because even your friends will become foes after hearing your views - blinded and bound by the propaganda of their respective religious activists..! And the consequences of that choice are dreadful and detrimental to the society..

Minds are like parachutes... they function only when they are open:

Some good human being said so... keep a open mind and read on..

My view of morality is that different individuals and groups may lead different forms of life depending on their religion, psychological make up, traditions, and so on, and that inducing or coercing them to do otherwise violates their moral integrity and damages their wellbeing.

The question not here is not against a Muslim showcasing his “artistic” skills against Hinduism or Hindus worried about their tolerant nature and need to wake up and act against all this blasphemy.

The view of Hindus being a tolerant religious community itself is debatable with the incidents happened in Gujarat, and so many other incidents happening all over India. You cannot brush it away by just saying that it is politically motivated. It is-to some extent. Not entirely though. If you still stick to the political motivation angle, then please define politics for me.. And, yes, probably we can console ourselves with the comparison of religious tolerance expressed by other religious communities. Thinking Hindus as the strongly tolerant community and others as not will only create the sangh parivar attitude and motivate one to go against the acts of the followers of other religions.

So, having said all that what is that we need to do? What are we going to do by keeping track of the absurdities going on around us? What else we can do other than just discussing about it? As Nabeel felt in Girish’s blog? It is a journey we need to start now.. A journey of awareness and peaceful protest.. a journey of thousand which should start with this one step of awareness…

Welcome to the world of absurd tolerance and uncontrolled artistic freedom.. For all who want to ignore this parasitic fundamentalism against Hindus/Muslims/Christains or any other religion for that matter, please wake up, your backyard is into flames and will you ignore that and sleep? If yes, whats your definition of life?

Coming to the action point, I support Girish... We should ostracize M.F.Hussain and his so called ‘artistic’ works which only shows Hindu Gods and Goddesses in nude and other Gods are spared. One of the reasons I felt was the actions taken by governments and religious big shots against the abusers of their religions like fatwa or total abundance of the followers the opposing religions as it happens today in the west is the primary reason for the so called artist M.F.Hussain from not blaspheming other religions. But is that means we Hindus are tolerant towards all these rubbish? Here are some of the questions I have:

Where were Shivsena, Sangh parivar, other religious ‘matt’s when all these shit happened? Were they dead or sleeping? What is the focus of these organizations here?

There are Muslim fundamentalist organizations in India endorsing Hussain’s work not because he is a Muslim, but for his “artistic” freedom.. What was the government doing all these days? What were the so called “opposition” parties doing then?

It’s a mere hogwash and vote bank political tricks motivating them to say or do anything. Can all the Hindus take a pledge to not to vote for the parties who allow this blasphemy?

In what way India is secular? The only thing comes in my mind is its pseudo-secularism. There is no point in saying that it is created by British colonial rulers... My be it was created by them.. But who is sticking to it and managing that now? British people? Will you sit in a furnace everyday just because I ordered you to sit on that one day? Whom are we trying to please? Whom are you trying to fool?

Coming back to the things we can do to stop this blasphemy...

There are opinions that democratic government cannot deal well with this and we need a semi-autocratic government so that this can be dealt with iron hand. Will you kill your own children for committing a small mistake? Yes, democracy is a method of governance and has its own weakness like any other method in this world. The point is that democracy is only a method, which would be a noble method, only if the people who vote are nobly intentioned. If the people who vote are evil intentioned and support terrorism, then giving them the right to vote leads to evil leaders being elected and legitimized in the name of universal franchise that was exercised thru the one person, one vote principle. Thus the issue to be addressed is not whether people have the right to vote in a free and fair election, but if they have the right temperament and cultural ethos that supports a civilized peace-loving way of life.

Can law do anything?

I don’t feel we can end this just by creating a law against blasphemy and that will be some kind of a fatwa... that’s again fanaticism.. All fanaticism is negative, all religious fanaticism is very negative and persistent – be it Hindu, Christian, Muslim or any other.. there are enough of laws which nobody follows and which are meaningless in today's society. And, moreover, this is not the issue which can be controlled by just policing and law enforcement..

What to do then?

The only thing that we can do is to totally go against these blasphemes and their supporting groups in peaceful means. They include but not limited to not buying their products, not endorsing their efforts as an artistic freedom (I myself is an artist... I know what it means when I say artistic freedom), ostracizing them from the society, and more than everything educate our children about them, their poisonous thoughts, their dreadful attempts to mar the beauty of humanity..!

By educating the children of today, we can have a good society having good human beings... There were very few people who got educated about life in their childhood. Think about this. Explore it further. Validate it against your own childhood. Do it passionately. Let the children know that the world is existing as it is today because of nature intolerance towards the things which kills it slowly. Tell them that nature as a phenomenon learns things and keeps it in memory.. And strikes back whenever necessary…!!

My conclusion is that if you and me don’t act against these good-for-nothing “beings”, Krishna or Jesus cannot do anything for us..!

We need to educate the children… children of this planet.. All the more reason why I named my blog “educate the children”..!!

Meta information , Terminological inconsistencies and its relationship with reality:-

Terminalogical inconsistency:-
The (twisted) root of all reality and non-reality.

Today I had a nice discussion with my friends ...! On "meta" things .. What is 'meta'? Why do we know something about meta? the significance of understanding things in a meta way, the relevance to operating systems etc..

By the way an FYI, "meta" means something about something. 'Meta info' means 'info about info'..!

I was explaining that an operating system can be called as " a collection of meta information structures". If you realize a 'file' is a meta-info structure, its easy to follow. Here, one of curious fellow was asking " What meta info stucture holds the info about the OS ?" I answered," the OS itself partially and the ROM hardware before / after installation". So, is that info called "meta of meta"? can we term it as 2meta? how many levels of meta we can have like this? Or is it we can say all as simply "meta"?

Normally the aftermath of an event is tougher to face/recover than the even itself. In this case too for me, I was thinking about this "meta" for a long time after the discussion.

In my knowledge," meta" has never quite found a generally accepted meaning. In Plain language or in a Controlled language, the word "meta" has no defined meaning which is universally accepted. And what about this new keywords plain and controlled? Let me explain.. "Plain" is what we use normally and "controlled" is used for special purposes which has special meanings assocoiated with each vocabulary. A controlled language, say controlled English - has its own dictionary with somewhat less than 1500 words or something - for special purpose usage .

By the way, in a 'meta' level, how is the above paragraph/discussion connects to terminological inconsistencies? Now, take the first sentence in the italicized paragraph,

I was explaining that an operating system can be called as " a collection of meta information structures".

also can be written as,

I was explaining that an operating system is nothing but " a collection of meta information structures".

and also,

I was explaining that an operating system is represented as "a collection of meta information structures".

Now what is the big deal? Its a big deal as we - human beings- understand the subtle difference in meaning conveyed, in all the above sentences. Will a machine understand the same? Do you know this is a hot area in computational linguistics? :-)

And, in human understanding too there are so many terminalogical inconsistencies playing and giving altogether different meaning - most of time out of context - resulting in poor or no undertanding of the nature or seriousness of a subject or an issue.

When you hear somebody saying, "AIDS is a deadly disease", for the first time, didn't you assume that people will die immediately once they are affected by AIDS? At least I assumed so. Also, some phrases like "Ultimate movie", "Absolute truth", "Crazy day", "Funny idea" are all misleading. A child will have tough time understanding these terminalogies. So as a machine..!

Oxymorons:

An Oxymoron is a combination of contradictory or incongruous words, such as 'Cruel Kindness' or 'Jumbo Shrimp' (Jumbo means 'large' while Shrimp means 'small'). It is a literary figure of speech in which opposite or contradictory words, terms, phrases or ideas are combined to create a rhetorical effect by paradoxical means.

I believe oxymorons are not contributing to terminological inconsistency, so as idioms and phrases. Do you think so? What do you think is the reason behind it?

It would be good thing to investigate the inconsistencies in our lives, specifically terminological inconsistencies and the effect that our acceptance of these inconsistencies has on our overall relationship with reality.

There is no absolute truth. Every action has its positive and its negative repercussions, and not even the hypothetical god itself knows the balance between the two. As we travel this life, trying to understand which rules and regulations apply to us and are good to follow, discarding those that are not helpful in our personal toolbox, don't we all want to know if the rule we have accepted will advance our position? But we don't.

Ontology - and the confusion over meaning and identification:

One example of terminalogical inconsistency is the word "Ontology". Onltology has different meanings in contexts. In philosophy, ontology means a study of being or existence as well as the basic categories thereof—trying to find out what entities and what types of entities exist. Ontology has strong implications for the conceptions of reality.

And, in a different context, in In Information Science, an ontology is the product of an attempt to formulate an exhaustive and rigorous conceptual schema about a domain. This domain does not have to be the complete knowledge of that topic, but purely a domain of interest decided upon by the creator of the ontology.

In data modelling theory, they call a glossary as onltology to that model, which ever model it can be...!

Which one I should follow is not the issue.. As long as I am conscious about the word having context-sensitive meanings, the inconsitency factor is immaterial. But in life we are not conscious about the al teh happenings while we are doing anything. Sometimes it is limited by or beyond human capability too. If we are always conscious about what we do andthe meta info of what we do , and the meta info of the meta info(2-meta?) and so on, we cannot do anything properly. We will end up thinking about thinking about.. Huh...

Effects in our reality:

What happens due to the terminalogical inconsistency to human being is this. We lose touch with the nature or reality of the matter and its context OR we end up concentarting too much onto it.. With all intuition and consciousness /conscience- if this is happening (or is it happening because we posses intuition and consciousness /conscience? ) , then what will happen to the machines which does not have all these ?

Terminaological inconsistencies happen due to our presuppositional mind. Everyone has certain beginning points in their thinking. For instance, we may assume that our eyes see a real world. These beginning points are called presuppositions because we pre-suppose our beginning points are true. Without presupposing something we could not think or talk to each other. No one can avoid adopting some sort of presuppositions. But are our presuppositions consistent with our other beliefs? If not, we are a living contradiction. We say we believe one thing, but we really believe something else. This line of thought leads to the conclusion that a personal infinite creator God exists, and that he has created us as spiritual and personal beings. But this is again a presupposition called belief...!

The topics which will come to my mind due to this type of realization are Reason, Freedom and Morality, existense, quantum theory of uncertainty, and finally God..!!

Reason, Freedom and Morality:

Reason cannot be attributed as we know that any time we use our reasoning ability to draw conclusions, and any time we look at patterns in the universe to discover truth (such as scientific laws) we are affirming by our actions that we already suppose there is a rational basis to the universe. And that gives us the same result as a terminaological inconsistency, here the 'presupposed thought' (idea?) becomes the terminology...!

When we act as though we are free choosing beings, rather than determined ones, we imply that we believe there is a basis for freedom.

The same goes for morality. Morality is impossible without free choice. Suppose I use a chain saw to sever someone's head from his body. When the police come, they arrest me, not the chain saw, even though the chain saw actually did the cutting. Why shouldn't the chain saw have to serve a prison sentence along with me?

The answer is obvious. The chain saw is a machine, incapable of choice. It does whatever I make it do. Therefore, we ignore the saw from the standpoint of morality and go the first free-choosing being involved in the crime. Only when we are free to choose can we be held responsible morally.

People who accept that there is such a thing as morality must also presuppose a personal basis for morals. Ask yourself, "Is it morally wrong to sexually abuse 3 year olds?" "Is this purely a personal moral preference, or is there a universal moral standard at stake?" If such a moral is universal, and lies outside of the individual's decision to make it a moral, then there must be a basis.

Too much of an explanation? No problem.. thats a nice thing.. See what all I am trying to convey now using the technical terminology is giving you some other thoughts about my nature and personal interest and preferences.. Even though the terminology doesn't sound inconsistent.. It doesn't - as we didn't compare this with anything else.

And the more you read materials like this and try to understand simultaneously, you get more confused. Confusion is nothing but the fruit of terminological inconsistency...! That is the effect of inconsistency on our reality...!

If you read my Qubits article carefully, and if you had/have questions of the kind, What is this quantum jumps, spins are all effecting into ? Why quantum reality is uncertain? Why quantum reality is measurably infinite? and the like, here is the answer- one answer for all the questions:

Inconsistency is the unrealizable reality whether it is terminological or in meta level...! At any given point of time(yet another terminologically inconsistent word..!), We won't know about reality and the reality itself simultaneously...! that means cause or effects ..one at a time.. not both...!! Just like LOVE..!! :-)

You are saying, Oh.. My God...?? Me too joining you.. But for a different purpose..! See God is also personalized..!! My God..! Your God? Why? How? If we are all human beings, why didn't we think alike? How come we are thinking very differently and the meaning of reality (or anything) become inconsistent?

Now you know why there are different Gods and different religions, different systems or worship within religions etc... That is the inconsistency inherent in our creation/evolution/genes... (by Whom)?

Part II - Towards Quantum Computers.

(Easy) Introduction to quantum theory:
[the much awaited article?! Huh.. :-) ]

Writing an introduction to quantum theory in a plain, non-formulaic, non-mathematical fashion is my passion, and I know it is a very tough thing, at least for me..! Still I am attempting that tough "thing" with all my might.. You are the person to tell me whether wrong or right..!

Disclaimer: The following passage is non-technical and this is not written to trouble anybody intentionally. All events are not co-incidental in nature as some of them are at quantum levels..! It requires the knowledge and understanding of science at about 10th class level..!!

Quantum theory or popularly called as Quantum Mechanics is a fundamental physical theory which extends and corrects Newtonian mechanics, especially at the atomic and subatomic levels. It is the underlying framework of many fields of physics and chemistry, including condensed matter physics, quantum chemistry, and particle physics. The term quantum (Latin, "how much") refers to the discrete units that the theory assigns to certain physical quantities, such as the energy of an atom at rest.

Want to know it better in easy terms..? :-) Read on..

Everything can be broken down into tiny packets or 'quanta' of energy. It's true, light is composed of photons, tiny blobs of quantum energy. We can even count them using special sensors, it is just that there are so many of them that all we see a continuous beam.

When a photon collides with an electron there is an increase in the quantum energy of the electron. This makes the electrons jump into the next quantum energy level - the size of the jump is dependant on the photon energy. Electron do not like being in this high energy or excited state and will soon jump back to their original position and in doing so will emit a photon. This is happening all the time, it is the reason why this computer works, your heart pumps and the sun continues to shine.

This is really all you need to know about quantum theory: energy is absorbed or emitted by atoms in tiny packets which move on to the next atom and so on and so on forever.

To appreciate quantum theory, you need to suspend common sense. The quantum jump is a real jump, there is no movement from A to Z passing though all stations in between. There is nothing between A and Z in the quantum world.

The good news is that quantum effects can only be observed in atoms. The jumps are just too small to be noticed. Even so, every move you make is the result of billions of quantum jumps - the end result (for us) a seemingly smooth transition. Which is why we can use Newton's Theory of Motion in every day life.. Do you know the fact that the fastest computer in the world could not calculate all the quantum changes needed to even blink your eyes..?

Towards Quantum computers:

For a second revolution in information technology, the experts looked to the spooky behaviour of electrons and atoms knwon in quantum theory. By 2002 physicists in Australia had made the equivalent of Shannon's relays of 65 yeas earlier, but now the switches offered not binary bits, but qubits, pronounced cue-bits. They raised the hopes that the first quantum computers might be operating begfore the first decade fo the new century was out.

Whereas electric relays, and their electronic successors in microchips, provide the simple on/off, true/false, 1/0 options expressed as bits of information, the qubits in the corresponding quantum devices will have many possible states. In theory it is possible to make an extremely fast computer by exploiting ambiguities that are present all the time in quantum theory.

If you're not sure whether an electron in an atom is in one possible energy state, or in the next higher energy state permitted by the physical laws, then it can be considered to be in both states at once. In computing terms it represents both 1 and 0 at the same time. Two such ambiguities give you four numbers, 00, 01, 10, and 11, which are binary-number equivalents of good old 0, 1, 2 and 3. Three ambiguities give eight numbers, and so on, until with 50 you have a million billion numbers represented simultaneously in the quantum computer. In theory the machine can compute with all of them at the same time.

Such quantum spookiness spooks the spooks(!). The world's secret services(?) are still engaged in the centuries-old contest between code-makers and code-breakers. There are new concepts called quantum one-time pads(Ha..Ha...) for a supposedly unbreakable cipher, using existing technology, and future quantum computers are expected to be able to crack many of te existing codes of the pre-existing kinds. Who knows what developments are going on behind the scenes, like the secret work on digital computing by Alan Turing at Bletchley Park in England during the Second World War?

A widespread opinion at the start of the 21st century held that the quantum computing was beyond practical reach for the time being. it was seen as requiring exquisite delicacy in construction and operation, with the ever-present danger that the slightest external interference, or a premature leakage of information from the system, could cause the whole multiply parallel computation to cave in, like a mistimed soufflé**.

Colorado and Austria were the settings of early steps towards a practical quantum computer, announced in 2003. At the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, finely tuned laser beams played on a pair of beryllium ions (you know charged atoms are called as ions..!) trapped in a vacuum. If both ions were spinning in the same way, the laser beams had no effect, but if they had contrary spins the beams made them prance briefly away from each other and change their spins according to subtle but predictable quantum rules.

Simultaneously a team at Universität Innsbruck reported the use of a pair of calcium ions. In this case, laser beams controlled the ions individually. Al possible combinations of parallel and anti-parallel spins could be created and read out. Commenting on the progress, Andrew Steans of Oxford's Center for Quantum Computation declared, "The experiments.. represent, for me, the first hint that there is a serious possibility of making logic gates, precise to one part in a thousand or even ten thousand, that could be scaled up to many qubits."

Quantum computing is not a new technology. For David Deutsch at Oxford, who developed the seminal concept of a quantum computer from 1997 onwards, it opened a road for exploring the nature of the Universe in its quantum aspects. In particular it illustrated the theory of the quantum multiverse, also promulgated by Deutsch.

The many ambiguities of quantum mechanics represent, in his theory, multiple universes like our own that co-exist in parallel with what we know and experience. Deutsch's idea should not be confused with the multiple universe's offered in some Big Bang theories. Those would have space and time separate from our own, whilst the universes of the quantum muliverse supposedly operate within our own cosmic framework, and provide a complexity and richness unseen by mortal eyes.

"In quantum computation the complexity of what is happening is very high so that, philosophically it becomes an unavoidable obligation to try and explain it," Deautsch said. " This will have philosophical implications in the long run, just in the way that the existence of Newton's law profoundly affected the debate on things like determinism. It is not that most people actually used Newton's laws in that debate, but the fact that they existed at all coloured a great deal of philosophical discussions subsequently. That will happen with quantum computers I am sure".

Part I - Introduction to Digital Information Theory.

Claude Shannon - The great juggler:

If anybody who visited Bell Labs in New Jersey (before 2001) told you that they met a man coming down the corridor on a unicycle it would probably be Claude Shannon, especially if he were juggling at the same time..! According to his wife: " He had been a gymnast in college, so he has beter at it than you might have thought." His after-hours capers were tolerated because he had come up single-handedly with two of the most consequential ideas in the history of technology, each of them roughly comparable to inventing the wheel on which he was performing.

In 1937, when a 21-year old graduate student of electrical engineering at the MIT, shannon saw in simple relays (electric switches under electric control) the potential to make logical decisions. Suppose two relays represent popsitions X and Y. If the switch is open, the proposition is false, and if connected it is true.

Put the relays in line, in series, then a current flow only if X AND Y are true. But branch the circuit so that the switches operate in parallel, then if either X OR Y is true a current flows. And as Shannon pointed out in his eventual dissertation. the false/true dichotomy could equally well represent the digits 0 or 1. he worote: "It is posible to perform complex mathematical operations by means of relay circuits".

In the history of computers, Alan Turing inEngland and John Von Neumann (pronounced Yonn fun noymann) in the USA are rightly famous for their notionas about programmable machinery, in the 1930s and 1940s when code-breaking and other military needs gave an urgency to innovation. Electric relays soon made the way for thermionic valves in early computers, and then for trasisitors fashioned from semiconductors. The fact remains that the boy Shannon's AND and OR gates are still the principle of the design and operation of the microchips of every digital computer, whilst the binary aritmetic of 0s and 1s now runs the working world..!

Shannon's second gigantic contribution to modern life came at Bell Labs. By 1943 he realized that his 0s and 1s could represent information of kinds going far wider than logic or arithmetic. Many questions like "Do you love me? " invite simple yes or no answer (don't consider people who are undecidable and indecisive!), which might be communicated very economically by a single 1 or 0, a binary digit. Shannon called binary digit a "bit". More complicated communications -strings of text for example- requires more bits. Just how many is easily calculable, and this is a measure of the information content of the message.

So you have a message of so many bits. How quickly can you send it? That depends on how many bits per second the channel for communication can handle. Thus you can rate the capactity of the channel using the same binary units, and the reckoning of messages and communication power can apply to any kind of system: printed word in a telegraph, voices on the radio, pictures on television, or even a carrier pigeon, limited by the weight it carry and the sharpness of vision of the reader of the message.

In an electro magnetic channel, the theoretical capacity in bits per second depends on the frequency range. Radio with music requires tens of kilocycles per second, whilst television pictures need megacycles. Real communications channels fall short of their theoretical capacity because of interference from outside sources and internally generated noise, but you can improve the fidelity of transmission by widening the bandwidth or sending the message more slowly.

Shannon went on polishing his ideas quickly, not discussing them even with close colleagues. He was having fun, but he found writing up the work for publication quite painful. Not until 1948 did his classic paper called " A Mathematical theory of communications " apppear. It won instant acceptance. Shannon had invented his own branch of science and was treading on nobody else's toes. His proportions. though wholly new and surprising, were quickly digestible and then almost self-evident.

The birth of New Information-Age:

The most sensational result from Shannon's mathematics was that near-perfect communiaction is possible in principle if you convert teh information to be sent into digital form. For example, the light wanted in a picture element of an image can be specified, not as a relative intesity, but as a number, expressed in binary digits. instead of being roughly right, as expected in an analog system, the intensity will be precisely right.

Scientific and military systems were the first to make intensive use of Shannon's principles. The general public became increasingly aware of the digital world through personal computers and digitized music on compact discs. By the end of 20th century, digital radio, television and video recording were becoming widespread.

Further spectacular innovations began with the marriage of computing and digital communication, to bring all the world's information resources into your office or living room. From a requirement for survivable communications, in the aftermath of the nuclear war, came the Internet, developed as Arpanet by the US Advanced Research Project Agency. it provided a means of finding routes through a shattered telephone system where many links were unavailable. That was the origin of emails. By he mid-1980s, many computer scientists and physicists were using the net, and in 1990 responsibility for the system passed from the military to US National Science Foundation.

Meanwhile at CERN, Europe's particle physics lab in geneva, the growing complexity of experiments brought a need for advanced digital links between scientists in widely scattered labs. It prompted Tim Berners-Lee and his colleagues to invent the World Wide Web(WWW) in 1990, and within few years everyone was joining in. The WWW's impact on human affairs was comparable with the invention of steam trains in the 19th century, but more sudden.

Just because the systems of modern information technology are so familiar, it can be hard to grasp how innovative and fundamental Shannon's ideas were. A couple of scientific pointers may help. In relation to the laws of heat, his quantifiable information is the exact opposite of entropy, which means the degradation of high forms of energy into mere heat and disorder.

Life itself is a non-stop battle of hereditary information against deadly disorder, and Mother Nature went digital long ago. Shannon's mathematical theory of communication applies to the genetic code and to the on-off binary pulses operating in your brain as you read this words.

By the way where is this Qubits - quantum bits or something like that mentioned?

In my knowledge, there are two approaches in knowing a thing. Top-down (i.e) to know the big picture first and get to know the parts versus Bottom-up (i.e) to know the parts first and then get to know the big picture.

Is it possible for anybody to do this simultaneously?

Is the level of knowledge you achieve in both the ways are same always? If yes, how? If no, Why?.

Conspiracy of Silence - Child Sexual Abuse.. The Bitter chocolate

This thought contains obscene words and incidents - which anyways are available all over our highly cultured society. Here, I have shamelessly used the resources found in the book "Bitter Chocalate" by Pinki Virani and the resources from American Psychological Association - after all I am much better than the people who use other's works happily without specifying the source.

Child Sexual Abuse? Conspiracy of Silence? What about the topic? Not good? Burning topic? Burning where? Do we know what's that all about? Do we care? Do we know what kind of society we live in and boast off? What are we supposed to do?

What the hell is this?
Yes. It is a Hell.. for the victims.. For the families of victims.. for you and me.. for our society.. Please read on..

I am presenting my thoughts here.. I was always thinking about this.. just as some or all of you do.. It's just that I got the book "Bitter Chocolate" by Pinki Virani (who herself was a CSA victim) from British Library which made me think ad look into our society in a entirely different way and triggered my long-term bitterness - which was buried somewhere inside my subsonscious mind - against the perpetrators and pushed me to set aside my articles on Congitive science and quantum mechanics - against my promise to you all - to write this thought.

I opened that book with lot of uneasiness and angry.. and completed with loads of tears(boys (and men) don't cry? who the fuck told that?) and determination to do something for this.. The buds in our homes, in our neighbourhood, in our country.. in our society..!

Let's come back to the burning thing..In the entire world there are millions of young, adolscent hearts are burning.. for generations.. Let's talk about it.. Let's face it.. Let's explore the different, dirty face of our great India's 'glorified'(pun intended) notion of family honour and morality...

Lets start with some "great" events at our glorified homes.. I have given only two, though there are so many given in the book and thousands happening without you and me noticing or noticing and not identifiyiing it as CSA...

Scene-1

A 3-year old comes up to her mother who is dressing up to go out for dinner that evening ith her husband and says,"Mommy, show me your titties"
"What"
"Show me your titties"
"Chee-chee, who taught you such dirty things?"
"S'not dirty, dadaji says it."
"Dadaji says it? To whom?"
"To me."
"And then what do you do?"

The little girl quickly pulls up her T-shirt with both her hands and dances around her mother's bedroom. "My titties,my titties,my titties, yea, yea, yea..!"

The mother calls her 5-year old son. "Does Dadaji tell your sister to do this?"
"Yes, mommy."
"What else does he do?"
"He does funny things to her panties, then he washes her panties."
"Does he do anything to you?"
"No mommy."
"Are you sure?"

The daughter chips in, for her it's a game. "He's lying mommy, he's lying. Dadaji tells him to show him his popat(parrot), then he holds it."

This is a tableux which recently unfolded for a young mother like a thunderbolt from the blue right into her happily married life. Especially grim was the maginitude of the abuse, that it had gone on for so long and neither she nor her husband had an inkling of what was done to their childen by their grandfather.

Scene-2

A 12-year old Chennai boy is initiated into sexual activity by a 20-year old married woman, his neighbour. Their 'affair' lasts for two years, even through the first few months of her pregnancy. The woman has no idea whose child it is, the boy-child's or her husband's, but there is no assumption other than the obvious in their neighbourhood. The woman gives birth to a girl and does not resume the affair. The boy tries, she puts him off, first citing her post pregnancy status and her daughter as reasons.

The boy is now sixteen, the little girl two.

The boy rapes the little girl in revenge.

Is it not a bitter chocolate to chew? Better chew it now, else you will be chewing more bitter chocolates in your life..

What is Child Sexual Abuse?
By now, you must have understood what it is. Just for more clarity, let me tell you more:

There is no universal definition of child sexual abuse. However, a central characteristic of any abuse is the dominant position of an adult that allows him or her to force or coerce a child into sexual activity. Child sexual abuse may include fondling a child's genitals, masturbation, oral-genital contact, digital penetration, and vaginal and anal intercourse. Child sexual abuse is not solely restricted to physical contact; such abuse could include noncontact abuse, such as exposure, voyeurism, and child pornography. Abuse by peers also occurs.

Who are the Victims of Child Sexual Abuse?
Children and adolescents, regardless of their race, culture, or economic status, appear to be at approximately equal risk for sexual victimization. Statistics show that girls are sexually abused more often than boys are. (However, boys' and, later, men's, tendency not to report their victimization may affect these statistics). Some men even feel societal pressure to be proud of early sexual activity (no matter how unwanted it may have been at the time). It is telling, however, to note that men who have been abused are more commonly seen in the criminal justice system than in clinical mental health settings.

Who are the Perpetrators of Child Sexual Abuse?
Studies on who commits child sexual abuse vary in their findings, but the most common finding is that the majority of sexual offenders are family members or are otherwise known to the child. Sexual abuse by strangers is not nearly as common as sexual abuse by family members. Research further shows that men perpetrate most instances of sexual abuse, but there are cases in which women are the offenders. Despite a common myth, homosexual men are not more likely to sexually abuse children than heterosexual men are.

What are the Effects of Child Sexual Abuse?
Children and adolescents who have been sexually abused can suffer a range of psychological and behavioral problems, from mild to severe, in both the short and long term. These problems typically include depression, anxiety, guilt, fear, sexual dysfunction, withdrawal, and acting out. Depending on the severity of the incident, victims of sexual abuse may also develop fear and anxiety regarding the opposite sex or sexual issues and may display inappropriate sexual behavior. However, the strongest indication that a child has been sexually abused is inappropriate sexual knowledge, sexual interest, and sexual acting out by that child.

The initial or short-term effects of abuse usually occur within 2 years of the termination of the abuse. These effects vary depending upon the circumstances of the abuse and the child's developmental stage but may include regressive behaviors (such as a return to thumb-sucking or bed-wetting), sleep disturbances, eating problems, behavior and/or performance problems at school, and nonparticipation in school and social activities.

But the negative effects of child sexual abuse can affect the victim for many years and into adulthood. Adults who were sexually abused as children commonly experience depression. Additionally, high levels of anxiety in these adults can result in self-destructive behaviors, such as alcoholism or drug abuse, anxiety attacks, situation-specific anxiety disorders, and insomnia. Many victims also encounter problems in their adult relationships and in their adult sexual functioning.

Revictimization is also a common phenomenon among people abused as children. Research has shown that child sexual abuse victims are more likely to be the victims of rape or to be involved in physically abusive relationships as adults are.

In short, the ill effects of child sexual abuse are wide ranging. There is no one set of symptoms or outcomes that victims experience. Some children even report little or no psychological distress from the abuse, but these children may be either afraid to express their true emotions or may be denying their feelings as a coping mechanism. Other children may have what is called "sleeper effects." They may experience no harm in the short run, but suffer serious problems later in life.

Can Children Recover from Sexual Abuse?

In an attempt to better understand the ill effects of child abuse, psychologists and other researchers have studied what factors may lesson the impact of the abuse. More research needs to be done, but, to date, factors that seem to affect the amount of harm done to the victim include the age of the child; the duration, frequency, and intrusiveness of the abuse; the degree of force used; and the relationship of the abuser to the child.

Children's interpretation of the abuse, whether or not they disclose the experience, and how quickly they report it also affects the short- and long-term consequences. Children who are able to confide in a trusted adult and who are believed experience less trauma than children who do not disclose the abuse. Furthermore, children who disclose the abuse soon after its occurrence may be less traumatized than those children who live with the secret for years.

Some researchers have begun to look at the question of whether someone can recover from sexual abuse, and, if so, what factors help in that recovery. Children and adults who were sexually abused as children have indicated that family support, extra-familial support, high self-esteem, and spirituality were helpful in their recovery from the abuse.

It is important for victims of abuse to relinquish any guilt they may feel about the abuse. Victims also report that attending workshops and conferences on child sexual abuse, reading about child sexual abuse, and undergoing psychotherapy have helped them feel better and return to a more normal life. Research has also shown that often the passage of time is a key element in recovery.

Counseling and other support services are also important for the caregivers of abused children. One of the strongest predictors of the child's recovery from the abuse experience is a high level of maternal and family functioning. (This, of course, assumes that the abuser was not a member of the immediate family or, if so, is not still living within the family.)

Protecting Children From Sexual Abuse

The typical advice "Don't Talk to Strangers" doesn't apply in this case. Most sexual perpetrators are known to their victims.

Do not instruct children to give relatives hugs and kisses. Let them express affection on their own terms. Teach them the difference between 'good touch'and 'bad touch'.

Teach your children basic sexual education. Teach them that no one should touch the "private" parts of their body. Please avoid assigning names and numbers like "parrot" and "mirchi" to their genitalia. A health professional can also help to communicate sex education to children if parents are uncomfortable doing so.

Develop strong communication skills with your children. Encourage them to ask questions and talk about their experiences. Explain the importance of reporting abuse to you or another trusted adult.

Teach your children that sexual advances from adults are wrong and against the law. Give them the confidence to assert themselves against any adult who attempts to abuse them.

Make an effort to know children's friends and their families.

Instruct your child to never get go anywhere with anyone without your permission.

Teach your children that their bodies are their own. That it is OK to say they do not want a hug or that certain kinds of contact make them uncomfortable.

It is important to remember that physical force is often not necessary to engage a child in sexual activity. Children are trusting and dependent and will often do what is asked of them to gain approval and love.

The aftermath screws up lives - sometimes a generation:

One of my closest friend was a victim of CSA. The perpetrator was his room mate when he decided to 'work and earn his living' at the age of 17 in a nearby city hotel . Besides having great clarity of thought in all worldly affairs, with amazing skills in computer graphics, he does not stay in any job, does not want to go for any job now, says he is preparing or studying something to anybody who care to ask what he is doing now.

He shuns all help from those truly care for him; all that friends can do is draw his attention to the problem and then not feel depressed when he intellectualizes the entire situation for them and simply cuts them off. Now he says he is like this because of his parents. In what way? They never guided him to do anything meaningful in his life and criticizing anything meaningful he does. He is depressed, concluded everything around him as "dirty", "filthy", and people are basically "cheaters"... In the midst of all this, the perpetrator continues to work in a hotel in his very town - enjoying in four-times food a day..!

Another friend of mine is a Bachelor of Science(B.Sc)-in Maths and from a well-off family but in the same condition as a victim of CSA.. And his perpetrator was his "shining paper sister-in-law"('Minukku thaal maini' -in his language). He tried appearing for his ICWA exams.. tried.. actually.. Never passed a single paper... And, he is not working anywhere now.. What is so pathetic is that nobody in his family has done anything for him in this regard except abusing him more in front of his friends and in public.

These incidents may sound like a page of a third rate porno magazine. But isn't the reality? Isn't it sucks?

My dear friends.. if you know What I am talking about...or not..Who will make the victims undertand this if not us?

Some "experts" have suggested that the victim will be 'cured' if the perpetrator is made to apologize to the victim in person.. And they have some useless case studies to support their claim.

What worth can a bastard's apology have?
Why would you yearn for an apology from a bastard?

Find them and put them in front of the law - though Indian laws say only penile penetration is termed as rape and ignores all the physical abuse and the 'objects' used in rape and the 'objectives' of a rapist go unnoticed - please accept the good news - 'experts' are "working" on it for a long time..! It will be done before we find the origin of Universe or at least before I become the President of India.

Will the self-appointed "Tamil sevaks" throwing chappals, broomsticks, and all that shit at the face of freedom of expression in Tamil Nadu or the "Swayam Sevaks" aka "Sangh Parivar" or our "great governments" or any other organization ever understand or realize or work against CSA?

My God..! Am I Mad? What am I expecting from Bastard's?
Too much to hope for - for a sensible citizen of India..right?

Hey Dear Fellows..,

I'm back.. [with a bang?.. No after a bang.! :-)] This time with something on "Science of languages" ..

Science of languages

Hey what's that now? "Science" of languages..? Yeah.. Science.. Otherwise you can call it as Linguistics..[Shiva subburaj and I will always remember Sundar for this keyword..! :-)] The easy definition for linguistics will be "science of language". If you are an ultra-intellectual, then your type of definition is here: "Linguistics is the construction of formal objects designed to reflect and describe the observed behaviors of natural language"..!

Great.. ! What's the topic all about? Noam Chomsky.. This is one person who is untiring critique of US govt and its foreign policies.. and virtually anything it does..!

Fine.. Why Linguistics.. Chomsky.. and all..??

Okay..okay.. read on..He is a professor of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT and first person in this world (second is who else..? Obviously ME..!) to find out that languages have some grammar in common - not the common things in different language grammars - that make a particular language evolve and which connect all the languages in one point.. That was his Ph.D thesis at the age of 27..! That grammar is called as "Universal Grammar" and the grammar which 'generates' other grammars is "Generative grammar"...!! He explains that a child who knows nothing about any language (or grammar) learns a language quickly due to this universal grammar...That's in fact how we all learn our natural language..!!

I am into computing.. what am I have to do chomsky?

His contribution for linguistics has done great things to computing.. In terms of Natural language programming/processing, Cognitive science(?)*, Artificial Intelligence, and Intelligent language/compiler design..! Interesting..? Want to know more about him/his works? I shouldn't be saying all about him.. (because I cannot...!)..

Nota bene: My oft quoted line-> "Colourless green ideas sleep furiously" is quoted by Noam Chomsky.. He quoted it as somebody said there is no possibility o making a grammatically correct sentence that is meaningless.. He quoted this sentence and imagine the condition of other person..!! ;-)

Time is one of the (probably only) big things which control our life. By the way, what is this Time all about? Do we know how to define time and to explain it to others in an understandable way? Before getting answers to these questions, let’s see the definitions of Time.

Definitions of Time:

an instance or single occasion for some event; "this time he succeeded"; "he called four times"; "he could do ten at a clip"
an indefinite period (usually marked by specific attributes or activities); "he waited a long time"; "the time of year for planting"; "he was a great actor is his time"
a period of time considered as a resource under your control and sufficient to accomplish something; "take time to smell the roses"; "I didn't have time to finish"; "it took more than half my time"
a suitable moment; "it is time to go"
the continuum of experience in which events pass from the future through the present to the past
clock time: the time as given by a clock; "do you know what time it is?"; "the time is 10 o'clock"

Read that? Is the 8th point interest you? What is that fourth dimension? As per the Cartesian system we have only three dimensions, right? What is Space-Time? Want to know more about this? I recommend you to go ahead and purchase (yes, purchase) the book, “A Brief History of Time” by Stephen Hawking.

I feel my comments given below may be some help before (and some times, after) you Buy/read this book:

The story goes that this, arguably the least likely hardback bestseller since Caxton kick-started this whole shebang, is the most bought/least read book for years. It goes on to say that the bookshelves of a nation are littered with copies in which the bookmark stops at page 27 - the point at which Hawking introduces the concept of space-time and the virtual impossibility of visualizing in four dimensions.

If that's true, then by achieving that legendary point at least they will have learned about the historical view of the universe, and been grounded in what proves to be the only equation in the book - the one with the E, the m, and the c. Hawking is far from stupid in both his chosen field and mass-market techniques to popularize science. The book eschews math to explain both the cosmic and microcosmic worlds, preferring instead an approach based on example, liberally spiced with personal asides.

There is also, in a very real sense, a plot to the book. This is a quest, a pursuit of the Holy Grail of modern science - a Grand Unified Theory(GUT) of Everything. The possibility that all of Man's studies on scales universal and sub-atomic will eventually (possibly even within a few years) be able to explain the universe we see. As Hawking himself famously has it: "Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we would know the mind of God."

God is important to Hawking. Time and again the man seems determined, in all the reasoned argument of pure science, not to dismiss the possibility of God. It makes for sometimes odd reading, when Future Event Light Cones or Black Hole Event Horizons or the bizarre fact of light particles give way to an explanation why these need not necessarily preclude a Creator. Just sometimes it seems as though one of the foremost intellects of the age is trying to have his cake and eat it.

And if the book does have a plot, does have a story - and characters, the men (it seems always to be men) that have formulated and tested this stuff - then it also has to be said that in the final analysis it doesn't all quite hang together. The quest for the GUT is all, but has yet to be concluded. Consequently, in the final stages the book does seem somewhat to lose its way, the conclusions half-hearted, and too much (informed) conjecture takes over.

But the Million dollar question is: Could the book actually be read by all those who gave up? And the answer is surely a resounding yes. Hawking is not a great writer - he is a great scientist - but the two collide to make a hugely approachable science book. The warp and weft of his dialogue is easily assimilated by anyone with the time and patience to appreciate the argument. The science he offers is not simple - even mind-bending - but his presentation of it is as a torch in a darkened room. Plenty still lurks menacingly in the shadows (try getting your mind around the idea of more than four dimensional space if you can), but that, it is to be supposed, is for A Brief History of Time 2…!!!
